The War at Home: One Family's Fight Against PTSD

The War at Home: One Family's Fight Against PTSD Review

When your soldier returns home to you, it should be a happy and joyful time. You are glad your spouse is safe and sound back home and can't wait to get your life going again. Everything should be great! But what if the homecoming is anything but great? What if suddenly you can't connect, or you feel worlds apart? What if your vet is no longer interested in going out or being around other people? Maybe your spouse isn't sleeping well, or worse, becoming violent while asleep. Your vet may not be reconnecting with the kids and may seem uninterested in any new additions to the family. What if your spouse gets angry at small things or even becomes violent? What do you do? Do you ignore it and keep thinking it will get better if you give it more time? In February 2003, Shawn Gourley's husband, Justin, returned home from his tour in the Middle East where his ship was deployed to assist Operation Enduring Freedom. Cracks were already showing in his personality, cracks that would widen dramatically into full-on fractures by the time he returned home in June 2004 from his third tour that marked the end of his military career. For the next 4 1/2 years their relationship was very difficult, and at times, downright terrifying for her and the children. It wasn't until January 2009 that Justin was able to get treatment. He was finally diagnosed with PTSD in August 2009. Those are the broad strokes of their story, but the details of how Shawn fought to save her family will leave you transfixed until the end.

Coming Home Again: A Family-Of-Origin Consultation

Coming Home Again: A Family-Of-Origin Consultation Review

This is a case study of a single family that underwent family-of-origin therapy, presented by one of the earliest and best-known pioneers in the field. This book presents the two dimensions of the therapeutic experience: that of the therapist and that of the clients. Framo and Levine serve as the therapy team, while Weber and his family are the clients in these two specialized, intense, brief intervention sessions that occurred one year apart. The transcripts of the sessions are supported by commentary from both therapists as well as insights from Weber - the client - who brings to bear clinical knowledge and knowledge of himself and his family. The underlying story - the story of the therapists - is almost as compelling as the family's story. It is a candid, honest look at family-of-origin therapy from those who partook in the sessions.

The remarkable true story of a couple on the brink of separation who finds love again while spending a year in Italy with their family now including an update five years later.

Tired, empty, and disillusioned with married life, Susan Pohlman was ready to call it quits. As soon as she and her husband, Tim, completed their business trip to Italy, she planned to break the news that she wanted to end their eighteen-year marriage.

During their last day as they walked along the Italian Rivera, Tim fantasized aloud that, perhaps, they could live there. After initially dismissing the idea, Susan realized that she wanted to give their marriage another try and that maybe life in such a beautiful place could bring them back to each other.

Together with their fourteen-year-old daughter and eleven-year-old son, they leave the hectic life in Los Angeles for a more intimate lifestyle in Italy.

Susan's funny, touching story reveals how stepping out of their normal day-to-day lives truly united her family in a whole new way. In this expanded paperback edition of Halfway to Each Other, readers will be able to enjoy the original story of their adventures -- no cars, no television -- and find out where they are today. When they returned to the United States, they went not to California, but to Arizona -- and to a brand-new life.
